If you had me as your instructor for Level 1 – Thermographic Applications, you heard my short (I hope anyway) dissertation on electrical safety. We mention electrical safety as part of the Electrical Inspections topic in Level 1, and I say the same thing every time. Electrical safety is a topic I am very passionate about. I have been involved in electrical safety since my time in the military, and I’m a firm believer in adherence to safety standards to protect us from injury. This is a topic I can talk about for hours.

Lo que muchas veces se busca es poder localizar alguna anomalía térmica en el funcionamiento de los equipos, lo cual podría ser el resultado de la pérdida de la eficiencia del funcionamiento de dichos equipos. La primera ley de la termodinámica podría parafrasearse como ‘la ley de la conservación de la energía’ e indica que la energía no puede ser creada o destruida, únicamente puede ser transformada.

You can take a group of folks (any group really), allow them to spend a few moments mingling, and the group will naturally divide itself.  People typically congregate with others with whom they have some common ground.  Football fans in one group, baseball fans in another for example.

Over the course of my years, I’ve been asked to inspect many sites, from a federal reserve bank to a mine 1600 feet in the earth with my IR camera. Not long ago, I was asked to inspect something I had not ever looked at before. A campground. The campground had just been sold and the new owner wanted to know what kind of shape the place was in. At first I thought, “this is going to take forever to look at all the campers.” However, I was getting curious as to what a bunch of campers would look like in IR. I’m just a geek that way.

En la industria aeroespacial se utilizan materiales compuestos que pueden estar construidos con múltiples capas de diferentes tipos materiales que se encuentran unidas. Estos materiales compuestos pueden ser utilizados por ejemplo en la fabricación de variadas piezas de aeronaves.

It’s hot today. I was in Tennessee recently, performing an electrical infrared scan in a laminate floor plant. Man, it was hot in there. Hot inside, hot outside, and high humidity. Generally a day better spent sitting in the shade with a fishing rod in your hand. How hot was it? In the plant it was 90°F with 72% relative humidity. Outside was hotter, 93°F with 70% humidity. How do I know? My trusty pocket weather station, of course!

All motors originate from the manufacturer with a name or data plate affixed to the motor casing.  This nameplate contains information that is essential to an effective motor testing program.  It provides the operating characteristics and design parameters for that particular motor.

Now, this seems like a strange topic to talk about in relation to infrared, but if you travel for your work you understand how important checking the weather is!

Una parte muy importante luego de realizar una inspección con termografía infrarroja es asignar prioridad a las anomalías térmicas encontradas. Como usuarios de la termografía al realizar el análisis de las imágenes de los hallazgos encontrados podríamos enfrentarnos a la pregunta de, ¿Qué prioridad se debe asignar a cada uno de los hallazgos?  Puede haber algunos patrones térmicos o anomalías térmicas muy fáciles de analizar y de asignar prioridad, sobre todo si ya se tiene experiencia previa en el tipo de equipo en particular inspeccionado.
