The Think Thermally and MotorTalk blogs are updated monthly, written by Snell instructors and consultants for those interested or involved with infrared thermography and electric motor testing (EMT). Electrical, mechanical, building applications, and EMT are covered in this blog along with discussions on theory, equipment, tips, news, and much more.

Preparations for Successful Motor Testing

It is said that we learn from our mistakes and in that light – I’m a genius! Motor testing, either energized or de-energized, should be a relatively straight forward process. If you’re not properly prepared it can be a frustrating experience. We all know that batteries, in particular, can be vindictive and mischievous intelligent life forms. It seems like batteries always wait until a crucial point, like 7-9.5 minutes into a polarization index, to fail! Spending a few minutes in preparation can stifle their efforts to impede your motor testing.

A Common Mistake

As time goes by and I get more time doing IR building inspections and working with other thermographers, I’ve noticed some common mistakes that thermographers can make. These mistakes could be due to lack of experience, lack of quality training, or both. Mistakes are easy to make if you don’t know any better. It’s likely that I notice these issues because I also spend a considerable amount of time instructing Level 1 Thermography courses and I discuss these subjects in-depth during class.

EMT Workspace

How you keep your workspace in the field can say a lot about what kind of technician you are. Other telling signs are how you approach safety; your own and that of your assistant. How meticulous are you in collecting and analyzing data? What condition is your equipment in?

Snap Judgments - Don’t Make Them!

I have been instructing IR with The Snell Group for a number of years, and it’s a very rewarding job. I love the moment in class when I see a student’s look of excitement that indicates they have just learned something they did not know before that moment.

One of the first things I try to pass on to a class is to fight the urge to rush a snap judgment on a thermal image. It is human nature to want to solve a problem faster than the next guy. Quick and uninformed problem solving usually leads to an improper diagnosis.

Building Inspections

For those of us that don’t frequently inspect buildings with infrared, it may seem at first glance to be an easy job.  However, thermographers must take care to interpret misleading patterns thoroughly; taking into account how thermodynamics influence the image we see on our view screens.

Electric Motor Testing: Dealing with Unrealistic Time Expectations

Early in the development of an electric motor testing program as an on-site technician, I had the experience of working with a customer’s electrical engineer. This individual had little experience or was just slightly familiar with motor testing.  Likely he may have heard about this “new fangled” method of monitoring motors at a convention or seminar and decided that he was going to micro-manage my efforts to implement a motor program at “his” site.
