The Think Thermally and MotorTalk blogs are updated monthly, written by Snell instructors and consultants for those interested or involved with infrared thermography and electric motor testing (EMT). Electrical, mechanical, building applications, and EMT are covered in this blog along with discussions on theory, equipment, tips, news, and much more.

8 Steps for Gathering Effective Motor Testing Data - Part Two

In last month’s posting, we briefly discussed about the importance of motors and motor testing. We also deliberated about the first step to take—personal preparation—and how they should understand the tester equipment, motor operation, and developing proficiency in testing. We then turned our attention to the second step—preparation for equipment to be tested—and criticality of equipment from multiple perspectives; operational, safety, logistical and environmental.

This month, we discuss the next three steps to take to gathering effective electrical motor data.

A Balloon Fix

Many times in my classes I’m asked “what are the most interesting thermal images that I’ve taken.” I always think back to a time that I was asked to look at a hot air balloon by the pilot of the Mayflower.

It was a great afternoon during Canton, Ohio’s “Hall of Fame” week and every year there is a balloon festival. I thought, “this year I’ll bring my infrared camera and try to get some good images.” At one point the pilot of the Mayflower balloon walked by and saw my thermal imager and it piqued his interest.

8 Steps for Gathering Effective Motor Testing Data - Part One

It is estimated that almost half (45%) of global electricity is used by electric motors. Electric motors drive all parts of many industries, from power generation to water and food supply to consumer products. The importance of electric motors in modern society cannot be under- stated. It is because of this large role that it pays huge dividends to keep our electric motors running efficiently through a quality reliability program that includes Electric Motor Testing (EMT) and Motor Circuit Analysis (MCA).

Tunnel Vision

There are times, as thermographers, we get what I call “tunnel vision.” At least I do, from time to time. Tunnel vision can be defined for our application as concentrating on the view screen and not looking at the target. This is especially true when we are pressed for time or “in the zone.” We scan the equipment looking for the faults to “jump out” on the screen or to break our alarm triggers. When I find myself doing this, I remember an inspection that nearly caused a great amount of trouble.

Getting There With What You Need

The work we do requires a lot of travel by air and auto. For me, air travel is the most common mode of transportation. Travel by air brings certain challenges regarding what equipment you can take and how to get it to your destination. For any job, you need to consider the risk of shipping your equipment to either your hotel or the job site. If your equipment is delicate and needs to be handled with care, you’ll need to determine how to safely get it where it needs to be and when it needs to arrive. Let’s take a look at a few of the options available.
