The Think Thermally and MotorTalk blogs are updated monthly, written by Snell instructors and consultants for those interested or involved with infrared thermography and electric motor testing (EMT). Electrical, mechanical, building applications, and EMT are covered in this blog along with discussions on theory, equipment, tips, news, and much more.

Rango vs. Ambiente

Range vs. Environment

Just because your camera has a very high or very low temperature range capabilities does not mean your camera will operate in those conditions. We must distinguish between the camera’s temperature range capabilities and its operating environment temperature capabilities. The cameras’ range is defined as: “the preset range of temperatures that can be viewed and/or measured”. Some cameras have a single preset range of temperatures and others have two or more presets that must be appropriately selected by the operator.

Thermal Patterns can be Deceiving

When performing a conduction inspection on a building many of the thermal patterns detected can be deceiving. Misinterpretation of patterns can be caused by a variety of factors, including (but not limited to) solar loading and soffit/eaves shading.

Staying Sharp

Thermography is often looked at as something a technician does when they have nothing else to do. Many of my students are sent to infrared training because the plant is operating at a reduced rate, giving people time to do other tasks. There are a few problems with using infrared as a “fill-in” job, performed only part-time. One issue is that the largest problems occur when a plant gets busy; there typically won’t be time for the person to do infrared. Another issue with using infrared only part-time is staying sharp as the thermographer entrusted with performing the inspections

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice makes perfect! This is an old saying that we have heard for a long time. A lot of us just repeat it without really taking it to heart. After all, it was something my grandfather used to say when I complained about casting drills for fishing. I would have to Stand 30 ft from a bucket and cast a fishing line with a small weight into it until I could do it 25 times without missing. I knew how to use a fishing pole (I was all of 5 years old) why did I need to do this boring drill?

Motor Talk

Are You Properly Trained?

Motor tester manufacturer training and independent vendor theoretical training are generally quite different. Over the years I am certain that you have heard the phrase, “You get what you pay for.” There is a lot of truth in that short phrase. Whenever you purchase a product it pretty much goes without saying if you buy the cheaper one, it is of lesser quality, prone to problems, and will not attain the longevity of the higher quality product.

The Teeth of The Tiger

Industry specific euphemisms can be incredibly humorous. There are a variety of air brake switches in substations that linemen often call “popsicles”, for example. A tangle of wires is commonly called a “bird’s nest”. In building science there is a component used to help install fiberglass batt insulation called “Tiger’s teeth”, and if you are not using them you might be causing the insulation system to be less effective.
