The Think Thermally and MotorTalk blogs are updated monthly, written by Snell instructors and consultants for those interested or involved with infrared thermography and electric motor testing (EMT). Electrical, mechanical, building applications, and EMT are covered in this blog along with discussions on theory, equipment, tips, news, and much more.

Inductance is Affected by Everything in the Motor

De-energized Electric Motor Testing (EMT) equipment provides a suite of varying tests. Of all the differing tests, inductance is of utmost importance because it is affected by everything in the motor. From a review of the below formula, you can see that inductance measurement is comprised of a number of factors, the characteristics of the core material, the dimension of the core, and the wire or windings, i.e. number of turns, all affect the measured inductance.

The Importance of the Date and Time Stamp

In our Level I Thermographic Applications Course, we mention that there are imager settings that cannot be changed after an image is saved. As an instructor, I tend to focus on what I consider the Big Three; Focus, Range, and Perspective (Composition). Those are important for obvious reasons. No one wants a poorly focused image, nor one with areas of heat that can’t be measured, or for important areas to be left out of the image. But there’s another setting that can’t be changed that’s mentioned in the course manual that I have been guilty of not mentioning. Does anyone know which one?

Holiday Cooking is a Rich Environment for "Kitchen Physics”

The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday here in the United States is a great time to "Think Thermally®" and have fun with your thermal imager as you get ready to celebrate with family and friends. I'm sure many of you enjoy hanging out in the kitchen before the big meal, trying to steal a quick bite. This year, for those of you who have access to a thermal imager, consider bringing it along. You might be amazed by what can be seen.

Using Visual Images to Provide Diagnostics and Suggestions for Needed Repairs

When creating an infrared inspection report it is important to include a high-quality visual reference of the anomaly along with the thermal image in the report. This visual image, along with written directions, will help the individuals responsible for the repair quickly find the equipment or component where the thermal abnormality exists.

Reliable Data Correlation with IR and Electric Motor Testing

There are many technologies available to monitor critical assets and increase reliability. We have found the use of infrared with energized electric motor testing (EMT) is a perfect match.

Pre-scanning with infrared will identify any connection anomalies or defective components.

The Keys to Interpreting a Thermal Signature in a Building

At a first, inspecting buildings with thermography might appear to be a rather straightforward endeavor. While this is partially true, there are some points to be considered. Heat transfer in buildings can be dynamic and understanding the thermal conditions and how they change during the inspection process is essential to interpreting the data collected. Additionally, it is important to understand that the thermal patterns present in a building may not always present themselves as might be expected.
